Bird Feeding Objects
PUBLIC ART COMMISSION
2025

Series of bird feeders designed for children to interact with by adding plant material that birds naturally eat. Leaves, grasses and seed heads become both food sources and sculptural elements, completing the forms over time. The project has an educational dimension, highlighting how many local flowers provide seeds for birds during the winter months. Crafted from copper and Corten, the feeders slowly develop a natural patina and visually “fade” as the season progresses – echoing the life cycle of plants and the feeding habits of birds.

Inspired by the proximity of the preschool sites to local bird reservation areas, a series of workshops were held with the children, where they observed and listened to local birds. The collaborative process culminated in a bird-feeding workshop, where the children created temporary bird feeders using vegetables and simple materials, serving as prototypes and inspiration for future permanent bird-feeding structures in the play environment.
